Before you begin the lesson on "The Creed", take a few minutes to watch the cartoon (right) which is the story of our Pope. Then just have a discussion about his life and share a little bit of what you know about or feel about Pope Francis...our Catholic leader.

Prayer is a conversation with God. It is important for us to really think about what we are saying and to pay attention to what we really mean when we pray. Let's help our children understand the Creed.. Help them to understand that we are professing what we as Catholics believe.

The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son,our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. |
PARENTS...After watching the videos above, please have a discussion with your child(ren) about God and what they believe. Below are some suggestions to get you started...
Both the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed begin with "I believe in God". Ask your child...what does that mean to him/her? Who or what is God to them? Do they believe that God is 'real'? Where 'is' God?
Ask your older child(ren) If they 'believe in God' does that make a difference in the way they act...at home, with friends, even with people they don't really like? Why does it make a difference?

For The Apostles Creed Coloring Pages for younger children click here. You can download and print these coloring pages.
For older students (and parents) click here for a CREED WORD SEARCH. You can save or print this word search.
For a CROSSWORD PUZZLE click here and have fun. (This is for older students to do with their parents).

Below you will find an interactive puzzle. The easier version is the top one. It is a picture of the Holy Trinity. Just click and drag the pieces until they 'lock'. You can not rotate the pieces. Before you begin, slide the bar at the bottom of the puzzle to center it and that will make it easier to see all pieces. You can do the puzzle over and see if you can do it faster (fun for older children or adults).
After doing the puzzle above...Ask your child.... "What is another name for "GOD: The FATHER, SON & HOLY SPIRIT"?" See if they know or remember that the answer would be The HOLY TRINITY.
Remind them... that means there is ONE GOD, but THREE PERSONS...Explain...that is what we call a 'mystery' because it is so hard to really understand how that could be.

Practice saying The Apostles Creed together using the video below Remind your child that in church we say the Nicene Creed which sounds a little different.
PARENTS...
After completing all of the above, please go the the 'Session One Comment Page' then
1) Write a short 'Family Creed'...in other words...what does your family believe? It might be very short right now and may change after we go through the whole creed during this year.
2) Write 2 things that your child(ren) learned from this on-line session
3) Write 2 things that your or your child(ren) learned from EACH of the "CHAPTER LESSONS" that they brought home.
(so 6 to 8 thoughts total for session one)
